OPEN CALL: Research X Broedplaatsen

Deadline: April 4, 2024, 12:00 p.m.

Project starts: May 2024

Cross-TIC invites you to submit a proposal for cross-media RESEARCH.

Cross-Tic seeks artists and creators who would like to conduct cross-media research (under supervision) within the theme of GOGBOT Festival: Atom Smasher. You will work with a GOGBOT supervisor on a research project aimed at deepening your artistry or makership. Research generally consists of two aspects. On the one hand, there is a deepening of your knowledge about (the use of) technological tools that can contribute to your cross-media craftsmanship. On the other hand, there is a theoretical content depth, in which you research the social contexts of the stories you want to tell as an artist or creator. Research should preferably take place within the Atom Smasher theme, but studies that touch on the theme laterally are also welcome.

The theme of 2024
Atom Smasher is an all-encompassing nuclear paean to the atomic building blocks that connect us all. It is a nod to the awesome power of particle accelerators, and an ode to the connecting, inspiring and also terrifying possibilities of technology. Mankind looks to science above all for solving the great social crises of the 21st century. But science is in dire straits. Politicians publicly question the usefulness of science. And the media reduce complicated data and research findings to sensational headlines. There seems to be an imbalance between the inaccessible scientific world and the daily reality of many people. They do not energize each other, but work against each other. This can lead to the emergence of uncontrolled social tensions and thus explosive situations. Atom Smasher aims to strengthen the relationship between science and ordinary people – like a particle accelerator.

Atom Smasher was inspired by CERN, the Institute for Nuclear Research in Switzerland, which will celebrate its 70th anniversary in September. CERN is best known for the Large Hadron Collider. This colossal 27-kilometer-long machine shoots the tiniest sub-atomic particles at each other at nearly the speed of light, a technological marvel that stretches our understanding of reality. Moreover, CERN illustrates the impact of human cooperation. It brings together more than 6,000 scientists from 80 different countries. Atom Smasher is not only a metaphor for the transformative power of science and technology. It is also a plea for what we can achieve as humanity when we collectively strive for progress – an urgent message in these divided times where all sides of the political spectrum clash adamantly. Because as CERN shows: together we can create new worlds.

In the research plan, you will address:

  • What is your research question?
  • How does this question relate to the theme “Atom Smasher”
  • Why do you want to conduct this research?
  • What prompted you to do this research and why do you want to do it now?
  • What step(s) do you want to take as a creator?
  • Broadly, how do you want to approach this research in elaboration and planning?
  • What expertise are you missing? (technical, artistic, conceptual, etc.)

After the deadline, all project proposals are discussed by four profile coordinators. The coordinator of the relevant Open Call is ultimately responsible for selecting the project and supervising it. The study will begin in early May 2024.

Cross-TIC is a multi-year project taking place throughout Twente that aims to give artists living and/or working in Twente the opportunity to develop innovative cross-media art projects. The projects can take place at different art institutions and can be short, medium or long. During a trajectory, an artist is encouraged to experiment, conduct research, enter into new collaborations and develop himself further in the business field as well. The outcomes are made visible at cultural institutions (libraries, culture houses, film houses, theaters and museums), at festivals or at the creative incubators in the region. Cross-TIC will take place until at least the end of 2024, and consists of a total of 33 development paths

Cross-TIC was developed by the Twente Culture Region: 14 Twente municipalities working together in the field of culture. In consultation with the cultural field, they developed a vision for culture in the region. Based on that vision, Cross-TIC was set up by Library Almelo & Theater Hof 88, Werkplaats Diepenheim, Oyfo, PLANETART, Schouwburg Hengelo, Theater Sonnevanck, Stichting Oldenzaalse Musea, Tetem and Concordia (penman).
